My Horses - The Girls

Istana Khazra (Kaz).

Kaz is by Talquah Jazaar out of Istana Kourtney. She's a chestnut Arabian mare, 14.2hh. She will be 18 this year.

Kaz has been with me for about 5 years now.

We went to our last hack show in 2007 (where she won Champion Arabian Mare - not bad for a 17 year old).

She has brought home many broad ribbons, but what she loves best is galloping around in the bush.

Kaz has chronic laminitis, and so is on a restricted diet.

Greenbrook Elizabeth (ILU).

Ilu is by Aintree Shadowfax (by Keston Royal Occasion) out of Wingana Well To Do (by Owendale Percival).

Ilu is the first horse I bought for myself (rather than being given).

She has beautiful movement and is a talented little show horse, but she has an attitude. She's like a teenager and I think that's why I like her so much.

Ilu had her first foal in November 2007 - Wallaby Gully Peekaboo, by Wingana Gideon
(see Kenda Park Welsh Stud ).

Kismet (Bones).

Bones is a beautiful, black TB mare 16.1hh. 5yrs.

She's gorgeous looking with a sweet temperament - lots of cheeky, curiosity that you get with a young horse.

She's very green, but a quick learner, responsive with nice balanced paces.

I'm currently training Bones in dressage.

Claire Mare

We took on Claire Mare late last year. She has had a very difficult life and is very timid, and head shy, as well as having some arthritis. She's a big busybody, always with her head over the fence wanting to know what's happening. While we never plan to ride her, we are rehabilitating Claire Mare so that she is easier to handle when we take care of her - administering worming paste, attending to her teeth and trimming her hooves.

We're coming up to our 12 month anniversary with Claire Mare. She's put on a lot of weight, and is enjoying being in a herd. We've spent a huge amount of time handling her, and while she's responded very positively to that, she's still not sure about blokes! We can now approach her without any fuss, although she is still hard to catch in a big paddock like this one. She's happy for us to touch her face and ears, which we were not able to do when she arrived. We think she will always be timid and spooky, but she is much more confident and seems to be very content. It has been frustrating at times, but overall it has been a very rewarding year.

Shadow.

My mother bought Shadow for me in January 1987, and she eventually succumbed to an illness in July 2007, so we were together for a very long time.

We went to pony club and local shows. Like Shelby, we never did very well, except in 'Pleasure Pony', which we usually won, and which (to my horror) made us eligible for Supreme Ridden Exhibit. We never won that, but Shadow is still the horse with which I had the greatest telepathic link.

It is our adventures together in those early years that I draw upon for most for Shelby's stories.

Shadow was one of those truly special ponies and I miss her dearly.
